Knol: a unit of knowledge

Last year in December, Google announced “Knol“, a project through which they could encourage people to share their knowledge. Google believes that there are many people who do not share information only because it is not easy to do so, and Knol was another challenge for them!

The key idea behind knol project is to highlight authors. Quoting from GoogleBlog:

Books have authors’ names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors — but somehow the web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted. We believe that knowing who wrote what will significantly help users make better use of web content.

2 days back, Google officially launched their beta product. With Knol, Google has introduced a new method for authors to work together that they call “moderated collaboration.” Comparing Knol with Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, Knol has an advantage of community tools that it has. People can easily submit comments, questions, edits, additional content and so on. However, Google plans to rank Knols as per their ranking in search results.

Let’s wait and see how Knol grows!
